At Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS), innovation extends far beyond the production lines. The facility serves as a global R&D hub pioneering the Group’s Software-Defined Factory vision — intelligent manufacturing powered by robotics, AI, digital twins and human-centered design. That commitment to advanced manufacturing and human-centered problem-solving shows up in unexpected places.


Above the factory floor, a fully automated farm grows vegetables without soil, using similar precision robotics and climate control technology as the production lines below. Some of the harvest feeds workers in the on-site cafeteria. The rest reaches families across Singapore facing food insecurity.

Singapore imports the majority of its food supply, and limited agricultural land means opportunities to experience growing and harvesting crops locally are relatively rare. This reality has heightened awareness around food security and sustainable sourcing, making such experiences — especially fresh vegetables grown with advanced technology in a local facility — particularly meaningful to residents.


During a recent CSR film shoot at HMGICS, a young visitor to the facility’s indoor Smart Farm explored that concern directly: “What if food stops coming in one day?” It’s a question adults can often shrug off easily, but one that’s harder for a 10-year-old to dismiss.


Over the past several years, HMGICS has worked to contribute to Singapore’s food security challenge in its own way — by demonstrating how advanced manufacturing technology can help address local food needs, if only on a modest scale.

There’s no mud here, and no farmhand walking the rows. Sensors, robots and a self-managing system handle the day-to-day work of keeping conditions optimal. This process often surprises first-time visitors, who tend to assume someone’s behind a control panel, remotely pulling levers.

That automation is the headline-grabbing part. The more interesting story is what happens to the vegetables once they’re grown.

Where the Vegetables Actually Go

Since October 2024, HMGICS has partnered with The Food Bank Singapore to donate a portion of the farm’s harvest to households facing food insecurity — a population that, in a country known for abundance, is easy to overlook. The mechanics of that donation are more logistically demanding than they might sound.


Sophia Ibrahim, Strategic Partnerships Manager at HMGICS, walks through the handoff. Each week, a refrigerated food truck arrives at HMGICS to collect the vegetables and transport them to a Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities (THKMC) distribution center.


“The timing here is quite important because we want to make sure the beneficiaries get fresh vegetables, which have been in a continuous cold chain,” she explained.  


Each stop along the route is calculated. The entire point of growing food indoors, unaffected by the elements, is undone if it sits in a warm truck for an afternoon. From the distribution center, the vegetables reach families through THKMC’s existing network — the same infrastructure that already delivers social services to the community, now carrying crates of just-harvested greens instead of paperwork. Lena Tan, Head of Brand & Communications at The Food Bank Singapore, who works with the beneficiary side of the partnership, puts the impact in plain terms:


“For households who face food insecurity, or who have limited means, nutrition is often compromised,” she said. “Donations in the form of fresh produce can make a real impact on everyday lives.”

In under a year, that impact has added up to roughly a ton of vegetables distributed to families who need them. The numbers are modest by agricultural standards — this is not a farm trying to feed a nation. But the people closest to the handoff describe something that doesn’t show up in a spreadsheet. Sophia recalls a visit to a THKMC packing session, where she spoke directly with beneficiaries.


“They were very appreciative of our donations because it was not often that they got to have access to fresh vegetables that were actually grown in Singapore,” she added.  


Serene Lim, a volunteer at Thye Hua Kwan (THK) Active Ageing Centre in Taman Jurong, describes the exchange more simply as something she “treasures.” Meanwhile, Tracey Tham, Lead Centre Manager at THK Active Ageing Centre who oversees the wider partnership, calls it a case where “something as simple as fresh vegetables can brighten someone’s day.”

A Small Answer to a Bigger Question

None of this resolves Singapore’s structural dependence on food imports — no single facility could. What HMGICS’s Smart Farm offers instead is closer to a proof of concept. It’s evidence that food can be grown reliably, cleanly, and close to the people who eat it, even in a country with almost no farmland to spare. Lisa Tan, Head of Brand Experience at HMGICS who oversees the initiative, frames it as a deliberate choice to look past the company’s usual output.

That instinct, to point advanced manufacturing technology at a distinctly human problem, runs through more than just the Smart Farm. It’s part of a wider effort at HMGICS to tell the story of the people building and running its facility, from engineers prototyping on the factory floor to teams like Sophia’s overseeing partnerships that connect innovation with community impact. The Smart Farm just happens to be the version of that story you can taste.


The boy who asked the hard question at the top of the tour never got a complete answer — nobody has one. But by the time he left, he’d reached an optimistic conclusion: “It’s a start.”
